untangling the web

Cleanse me, Lord.
Wash me right through.
Let the purifying work of your Holy Spirit
shower me, top to toe, inside and out,
reaching all the nooks and crannies,
all the secret places
that I don’t want exposed.

Cleanse me, Lord.
Take away the dross, the muck, the scum,
take away the rubbish
that has accumulated over time
without me realising.

Cleanse me, Lord.
Take away the things that weigh me down,
the things that cause me
to cling to this world,
the fleeting things that I hold dear,
but which have as much substance
as butterfly wings.

Cleanse me, Lord.
Take away the things that stain me on the inside,
perverting character and personality
and my ability to serve you
wholly.

Cleanse me, Lord.
Only you can truly know
all the depths of my being,
the intricacies of thought,
motive, action and reaction.
Wash me, Lord.
Holy Spirit, have full rein.
May your touch purify and invigorate
that I may be freed to live
joyously in your love.
