KNOTS, TWISTS AND FAITH IN GOD
The Wilderness Times

Desert. It starts with desert.
The character-building learning times.
When everything we yearn for is stripped away:
the cosy rhythms of life, the comfortable ready meals,
the relaxing night sleeps, the good people around us,
and instead
there is only bleak wilderness, anxious heartbreak,
dirt and dust, hunger and raging thirst.
There are shadows over us as we crawl towards the oasis mirage,
Clinging leech-like, sucking us dry.
And everywhere we look is barren desert.
There is no shelter, no let-up.
We didn’t want them.
We didn’t ask for them.
The failures, the disappointments, the health issues, the fall-outs, the crumpled dreams and disasters.
Desert. It starts with desert.
The character-building learning times.
When everything we live for is taken away.
Because it is in a desert
That we are remade.
We can take time to be still, cease striving,
let the discomfort chisel and shape us,
mould and sculpt us,
into something – someone – far more beautiful
than the sloppy, couch-loving individual we were before.
It takes the desert to transform us.
It takes the desert to transform.
It takes the desert.
